League phase, not four-team groups
Every club plays eight opponents. Table position is live from night one. That is why I bother with Matchday 1 at all: there is no “dead rubber in December” excuse, and books still price some of these like old group games.
Top eight go straight to the round of 16. Places 9–24 play a knockout play-off. The rest are out. You do not need the full 36-team list to bet Tuesday. You need rest days, travel, and whether the favourite is actually starting their World Cup XI.

UEFA’s published windows. Kickoff times move by TV; I treat the first Tuesday of each block as “the board is live.”

A favourite is a process, not a name
I will not print a lock. Lines move. Squads leak. What I do on Matchday 1 is the same three checks every year after a summer tournament.
1. Who actually played in July
The World Cup ended 19 July. Matchday 1 is seven weeks later. That is not a full pre-season for anyone who reached the last four. I count minutes, not reputation. A club that sat at home in June can look slower on TV and still be the better bet at a number.
2. Shirt tax on the 1X2
Big names open short because the public wants them. If the decimal on a home favourite looks like a poster, I switch to Asian handicap. −0.25 / −0.5 on a side that is actually fresh is cleaner than 1.35 on a side that just flew back from a final.
3. One ticket
I do not chain four “favourites” into an accumulator because UEFA put them on the same night. That is how the book gets paid for your confidence. One match. Stake you can lose without rewriting the month. Singles vs accas if you need the math.
